Am I Lucky or What?!

To get the full impact of this, you really need to click on this post from KPK back in February when he did 3 macro shots of Smart cars found in Kinder eggs. To get the fullest impact, read our comments back-n-forth about how to find them.

Okay, so I bought one Kinder egg on Tuesday when I did the grocery shopping. In the discount store, it was .55 Euro (65 cents). Here you see the front and the back. At one place on the wrapper there's a warning (in German, of course) that says it's not for childrern under 3 years of age.

Truth be known, it was downright hard for ME to get this little capsule open. I can't imagine a kid less than 3 being able to do it--though, who knows! KPK says the USA doesn't sell these because of restrictions we have for kids too young to know better when they DO open them and find something small enough to choke on.

Anyway, yes, I ate one half of this milk-chocolate shell after I knew I had a good enough photo. I may be dumb but I'm not stupid (not about eating the chocolate but about checking the photo). Oh, and I climbed up and down our 60 stairsteps 6 times afterwards :)

THEN THE SUSPENCE! What surprise toy was I gonna get? I had rattled the egg in the store to see if it felt heavy enough for a Smart car. But what did I know! I had nothing to compare it to. And what was my chance anyway?

VOILA! Of all the toys I could have picked, I GOT A SMART CAR! A fortwo coupé to be exact. Am I lucky or what! Apparently here in Germany the toys inside are a bit more sophisticated than in other countries because they have become quite the collector's item. I did an eBay search just for the halibut and couldn't believe what I came up with. No, don't tell me--not another collection! Okay, I'm gonna be good and simply take this Smart car home and put it in one of our shadow boxes. Donica will be glad, I'm sure, that I was so lucky on my first try!

  1. That is SO cute! Dixie's going to love this post.

I'm trying to think if we've gotten a Smart car yet, seeing that my kids have consumed literally hundreds of these eggs. I think I actually did see a little car sitting around somewhere but didn't connect it with the Ü-Ei. I'm so behind the times as to what's in them at the moment.

The collections people have here are incredible and sometimes very valuable. And the chocolate ain't bad either! (Way to go on the stair climbing) :-)

  2. I love these "Überraschungs Eier"! Orange always makes fun of me when I buy them (always around Easter). I guess I'm just a kid inside :-)

  3. Christina: Yup. I ate the other half today and did the same stair-climbing routine :) I'm gonna whip this thing!

CS: It's the kid inside that everybody loves, don't you think!!

  4. We have those eggs in Canada, and I have a very nice collection of toys. But I never saw that little car....Maybe they don't export it here ya know, the automobile lobby is very strong up here... LOL. I'm jealous or your little car. Now I'm going to buy lots of Kinder! Just to have one of these!

  5. For all I know, MP, they may sell the cars only in Germany? The Wiki article says in Germany "the manufacturer includes higher-quality toys than those available elsewhere." If I find another one, I'll save it for you :)

  6. Question: How much smaller is this toy Smart car than the real ones?

  7. OMG, Ruth. Are you serious? Hmmm. Well, I know model cars usually have a ratio, don't they. We my need KPK's help on this one. But to give you an idea, my little car is 1-3/8 in. x 3/4 in. To be honest, the real cars aren't too much bigger!

  8. Ginnie I was so fascinated by these eggs in Switzerland. They do actually have them here in Vancouver. Maybe I'll take a stab at buying one to see what's inside. I seriously doubt they will have smart cars here since they aren't so popular but who knows...

  9. Ginnie! You should see my Kinder Egg Blogging posts! I do mine with pictures that change when you roll your cursor over them (and I'll email you the link that explains how to do that photo trick).

In my collection of miniatures that I have in shadow boxes I have a few things that I found in them - a Frog Prince holding the princess' golden ball, a queen, a squire, and a Little Red Riding Hood with a Big Bad Wolf - all of them made of metal. The stuff you get in German Kinder eggs is often better than what you get on other countries because the stuff is made in German just to be sold in Germany.

  10. Ginnie, those Kinder eggs and Smart cars are neat. I bet children could find them fascinating, too, with half the fun being just finding out what's inside.

  11. Dixie: Christina definitely warned me, didn't she! I could see how they'd get addictive. In fact, I may start buying JUST ONE whenever I do the shopping--my reward :)

Tim: If kids here in Germany started saving or collecting their toys from when they first got them, they'd be way ahead by the time they're adults. Fun indeed.

  12. My God you are sooooooooo lucky!
I think you don't know how difficult it can be to try to find an item in particular with those Kinder!

My daughter have plenty of them! But each year they publish a chart where you can see all the one you could find. I told you, it's easy to get crazy about those...

I don't buy any now that my daughter is eleven. Last time I did, well, not so long ago, about 2 or 3 month ago, I bought three eggs, for Gene, for MP and for me... And of course, I had the ones I hate... a stupid little puzzle. *sigh*

I should do a post about that...

  13. I bought my second Kinder egg the other day, Clo, and got an 8-piece character from Monster Hotel. Cute but no cigar! It made me realize how really lucky I was to get the Smart car my first try.

  14. hey Ginnie - I got a box of three kinder surprise. The box says collect all 10 which naturally you know you will at least get one of them. Then I've gotten one other funny bird. So I guess I sort of knew what was coming...

Still your photos are great. I still can't believe how great they look...

  15. You and I could start a great collection, Expat, kids that we are. The other two surprises I've gotten have actually been pretty well-put-together. Very sturdy and pretty cute. But then again, it may be the Germany surprises.

Thanks for your kind compliments, as always!

  16. I have an out-of-an-Ü-Ei Smart Car sitting on my office desk. It's the same as yours, except it's red.
