The Strings That are Left

You're gonna get a kick outta this because it's Nicholas' reaction to Donica's surgery. But first of all, he and I had another gorgeous, balmy day in our woods this morning, after he and Mommy (Amy) spent an overnight with us last night. This time he decided having his "picnic" in the tree would be just splendid. And it was!

Back to Donica's surgery. Amy invited herself over specifically to take care of both of us by cooking a scumptuous dinner for us last evening. No arguments from either of us! Besides, we all wanted Nicholas to be around a convalescing "patient" after surgery, just for the education of it.

Donica showed him the big bandage covering her incision and explained that the doctor had to take out 2 nerves because they were making her hurt. He wanted to know what nerves were, of course, so she explained that they were like strings that helped make her feel things. But these particular "strings" weren't working right.

Nicholas immediately went into a response of "It's not good to take things out of us." No, of course not but we told him these 2 strings were okay to be gone.

Then he said, "Now that the 2 strings are gone, you'll have 3 left and that's good!"

We have no idea where he got the number 3 for what's left, but we all agreed that 3 left is very good. And with each added day (the magic number 3, since her surgery), what's left is getting better and better. She and I even went to a movie this afternoon! Getting in and out, up and down, is the worst part of the day, with lots of pain still, but other than that, she's getting around, and that's good.

We'll all eat to that!

  1. Nicholas was so excited to find his little perch in that tree. What a great spot for a kid -- and what great memories you're giving him with these long walks in the woods together! Nicholas loves his time with you (and Donica)!

  2. yes that is cute! I guess he's your little monkey...

And that last pic is so adorable! It's practically distracting me from what I want to say... :)

I'm so glad you guys are up and moving and outside. I think outside helps the healing too...

And any chance you aree saying which movie you saw?

  3. Amy: These walks with Nicholas are just getting better and better the older he gets. Every other word out of his mount is "G'ma!" "Look at this, G'ma!" "Come over here, G'ma," etc. He melts my heart!

ET: Yesterday we saw "The Pursuit of Happyness" with Will Smith and his adorable son! A perfect day to see it after spending that time with Nicholas in the woods! Yes, I felt the same way about Donica being outside. The sunshine felt very healing to me as well!

  7. Dennis: I told Amy that as Nicholas gets older, there's so much more to see and do. His enthusiasm is contagious! Yes, we feel very fortunate to have this special relationship.

Mad: Yes to all of it! The sun was good for all of us that day! And Donica IS better with every day--now on Day 5. :)

  8. It was so interesting to think about Donica's surgery from Nicholas' perspective. It's not good to take something out of your body, except when it's something bad! All that love around you is helping the healing, I'm sure. Lesley's friend's friend (Mike) had surgery on a brain tumor yesterday, one he's had for 10 years! Apparently he is recovering well! Thank God.

  9. Children that age are so direct, funny and reasonable at the same time. Understand you all love to have him around. And how exellent he is to calculate: How else could he know there is only 3 nerves left when you you have taken away 2? LOL.

  10. Ruth: I always wonder what will come out of his mouth next! I'm sure I experienced this when our kids were growing up but this is different, somehow. Maybe at my age now I pay more attention because I don't have the daily care of him! So glad to hear that Lesley's friend, too, is recuperating.

Tor: As we know, a little child shall lead us! So appropriate at Christmas time.

  11. Glad to hear that Donica is getting better. And It was neat to hear your stories of Nicholas.

I don't get to visit my blogger friends as often as I would like to anymore nor post on Shutterchance for a glorious reason. As of a little over a month ago, I gained a girlfriend and our relationship is growing wonderfully. :) But it also means that I don't have as much time to do other things. And some things just have to be eliminated. But I plan to keep checking back here as much as I can.

  12. Tim: I'm THRILLED for you! YAAAAAY! That's the most wonderful reason in the world for not getting to our sites and not blogging as much. Priorities, Man! I love it for you. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

  17. That boy is just so cute! And maybe he knows something we don't know about those strings? I wonder if he's comparing it to some kind of musical instrument or something.

So glad that all are doing well.

  18. Rachel: Yes, we totally agree!

Christina: Who knows what goes on in that kid's head! But I love it. Thanks for your thoughts!
