Family Time in America: 2014

The trip to America every year is, of course, MAINLY to see my kids!  We go in October because that's when the fair is, which g'son Nicholas still wants to visit with us.  "It's a tradition, G'ma!"

After our visit with Bob and Peggy, it was time to go to the North Georgia Mountains, where each year, now, since 2009, we've started a new tradition of renting a cabin...neutral territory in a space that fills us up to over-flowing.

It's a view to die for no matter what time of the day or night it is.
And we never tire of it!

Interestingly, I have very few pics to show for how much we relaxed there.
Amy wondered why I didn't take that many pics this year?
And I decided it's because it's the one place I truly relax...and forget about the camera.
If you're a photographer, you know exactly what I mean.

Thankfully, Amy took her own iPhone pic of us eating s'mores one night on the covered porch.

We also ate good food (which Amy cooked and I cleaned up), played pool and ping-pong,
worked on a jigzaw puzzle, watched football and a couple movies, etc., etc.

And for the first time ever, we drove into Blue Ridge, down the mountain....

...not just to grocery shop but to actually see the touristy town.
It's a town of ca. 1300 people in an area that used to be "controlled" by the Cherokee.

You could say it's a place that depends on the tourists....

...which explains all the art and doo-dads to buy and/or explore.

But the real photo-ops were elsewhere for Astrid and me...not in the stores.

I bet it's easy to pick out the pics I gravitate to, right, for photo manipulation?

How about $6,000 for a 1959 Rambler that "runs sweet?"

Or something a bit older and..."sweeter?"
(You know about rust and photographers, right?)

Yup.  This is what we do.

Speaking of traditions, we always stop at Waffle House the morning we leave the cabin.
That's Nicholas, Amy and Dennis (top-left).
I always get the hashbrowns, smothered and scattered "all the way."
Imagine my surprise this time to find sausage gravy added...new since the previous year.
I could have done without that part...but still, it was good enough to forget to take a pic!

 ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Since Mark wasn't at the cabin with us this year,
he invited Astrid and me for potato-sausage soup...a long-time family tradition.

Astrid LOVES taking pics of Mark's cat, Piper.
What a poser...and what a delightful friend for Mark, day after day.

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

The rest of the time we just hung around at Amy's house.
Nicholas LOVES his pink socks in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness.
His other g'ma (also named Virginia!) has had both breast and colon cancer, still alive.
Nicholas says she's his "best friend."  This is important to him!

You know I could eat him up, of course.
He's 14 now, a freshman in high school...and growing UP.

He and Astrid have become big-time buddies, a delight for me to watch.

This year SHE got her new iPad (like I did last year).
In a matter of hours and days, she knew more than I did after a year.

But at least I learned a new game ("2048") to which I am totally addicted.
I kid you not.  I still play it every day, trying to best my highest score.

Until next year!  The cabin is already reserved and we're counting the months.
It really is what going home is all about for me.  This is my family...
and I feel very lucky to have a home away from home.

The North Georgia Mountain Cabin

So, Ladies and Gentlemen, we're back from our annual trip to America!  Did it really come and go so quickly?

And since we packed a wallop into that 2+ weeks, I'll start with the last first...our time with the kids in the North Georgia mountains.

It's my 4th year as a family (Astrid's 3rd) to rent a cabin 2 hours north of Atlanta, but this time in a different one altogether...just as nice and with another spectacular view:

We're so lucky that owners rent out these homes away from home.

It's not hard to settle in immediately.
This was our first year to add an extra night, making it Thursday - Monday.
We kept saying it made all the difference in the world!

As you'd guess, our time was often centered around food.
Daughter Amy and Dennis were the cooks....

...along with son Mark's bran muffins (and carrot cake!)...

...and s'mores, of course, at least twice in between games of Spades.
Astrid and I were the chief bottle washers.  A nice exchange!

There was also ping pong, pool, football, jigsaw-puzzle making, laptop time...

Square Up (a new game for us)...

...and the hot tub for Uncle Mark and Nicholas, the boys.

I even had time to make the lining for Amy's last (of 5) cross-stitch Xmas stocking.

And then Astrid and I were off on our own, taking walks in the beauty of Mother Nature all around us.
Do you notice something????  A new Canon PowerShot camera for me, yes!
It replaces my 28-300 mm bazooka lens that was aggravating my sciatic issues.
I sold that lens to a fellow blogger and used that money to buy the new camera and an iPad4.
The new camera is 24-1200 mm, for you camera buffs...my new travel camera that also shoots in RAW.

This was October 17-21, just about peak time for the autumn leaves.

My favorite time of the year!

That time of the year, too.

Trick or treat?

Impressions, impressions, impressions...even in the North Georgia mountains!

How can you say NO to that!
We were there during the full moon on October 18th...and the sunrise on the 21st, the day we left.

All my images here are with my new camera, barely tweaked.
I'm a happy camper!

2012 in Atlanta with the Kids

As a P.S. to the Michigan trip, because it makes a good segue, here's what my post is today at Vision and Verb:  Dance Like No One is watching!

Thanks to Michelle, the official wedding photographer, for these close-ups!

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

That was Saturday night at Pumpkin Creek.  HA!  On Sunday, we flew from Michigan to Georgia to spend the rest of our vacation in the Atlanta area.  We had 5 days with friends Bob and Peggy south of the city (next post), while Dennis and Amy worked and Nicholas was in school, but the rest of the time, before and after, we were with "the kids."

So on that first Sunday, NICHOLAS.  Can you believe he's now 12 years old (7th grade)!  Here's the segue from those Dancing Queens above:

"C'mon, G'ma," he said.  Let's dance!"  And we did, 2 different times.
Dance Like No one is Watching, indeed!

And while Amy was preparing supper that first night, we were all over each other!

Pure Tom-Foolery.  Pure Love.
We each other.  We YOU.

This is our Atlanta family:  son Mark, daughter Amy, SIL Dennis,
g'son Nicholas, Oscar the White and CC the Chocolate Chip.

And Astrid, too, of course!
In fact, half of all the photos you see in this post are taken by her!
Nicholas off to school, in the neighborhood pool, putting puzzles together
(yup, we brought with us two 150-pc Jan van Haasteren puzzles),
watching movies....

...while the rest of us kids played our on-going battle of Spades.
Mark and me against Amy and Dennis, every year.

After our week with Bob and Peggy (next post), we came back for the Labor Day holiday weekend, with Saturday football in the wings for all.  Nicholas made Astrid promise her she'd wake him bright and early to get ready for all the games.  He had a plan:

Here's the scoop:  Uof Michigan is for moi!
USC (Southern California) is for Dennis.
GA (UofGeorgia) is for Mark.

After all the school signs were made (Oregon included for Nicholas?!?!),
banner flags were also made and strung up.
This was serious stuff.

And if that wasn't serious enough, Nicholas dressed up as a USC Trojan.
I stood my ground, of course, hailing Michigan as the Valiant Heroes.

The next day, Sunday, we had planned to Shoot the Hooch for Labor Day weekend fun,
but because thunderstorms were predicted, we decided to go bowling instead.
That's when we all remembered how much we enjoy doing that as a family!
It was Astrid's first time to bowl in 21 years.  She LOVED it!

In between, Amy cooked and I cooked.
No one ever went hungry!

And once everything calmed down again for the week, Astrid and I went off to meet friends:

Bob and Marc, forever friends, sharing ups and downs.
And Glenna, my first ex after my divorce from Bill...meeting Astrid for the first time.
Next we hope we can meet her wife from England...who's in the same boat as Astrid,
not able to move to the States till America allows marriage equality.
Guess how we're voting come November?!

The day we flew back (late) to Amsterdam, there were cleaners at the house, so Astrid and I went to the movies (if Amy weren't sick, ready to travel for work the next week, she would have joined us):

They don't have theaters like this in the Netherlands, so Astrid took lots of pictures
before we saw the delightful "Hope Springs" with Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones.
She even took pictures of me at the drive-thru ATM!
We're not in Holland, you realize.

Now, see that Thank-You stand above?

Next time I'll be more careful with what I say.  HA.
But this is the first time Astrid took a video that I uploaded...
from the little point-n-shoot camera we took for this entire American trip.
Just to say we did it!

Shortly after the movie it was time to say Good-Bye to The Kids...until next year!  As Mark drove us to the airport, we passed through Atlanta's Mid- and Downtown areas:

 Pay attention!
Next week I plan to finish our American trip with the 5 days we spent at Bob and Peggy's...
who visited us here in the Netherlands last year.  Remember?
One fun thing we did with them was walk around Downtown Atlanta midst those skyscrapers!

In the meantime, don't forget the Dancing Queens at Vision and Verb, today!

Garderen Sand Sculptures 2025: "Amsterdam 750 Years"

For how much Astrid and I both LOVE LOVE LOVE the Garderen sand-sculpture themes ever year, it's hard to believe that the last time we ...
