SALZBURG: Hohensalzburg Fortress

Everywhere you go in the vicinity of Salzburg's Old Town, you can't help but see the big castle on the hill overlooking the Salzach River. We could see it from our hotel room on the 4th floor as well as from the hotel's terrace on the 8th floor (below left). Once at the castle, you can look down over the church steeple-tops of Old Town to our hotel in the distance, across the river at the Staatsbrücke bridge (below right). The "To and From" shots.

Once inside the castle, there's everything castle you'd ever want to see: the canons, torture towers, gala rooms, courtyards, and even a toilet (a.k.a. inside outhouse!). My favorite sight/site is always the church--in this case, the castle's Chapel of St. George--as seen both outside and in from these photos below. Barely big enough for a king and his entourage.

Besides our 4-course candlelight dinner, followed by the concert (from a couple posts back), we played around in the Marionette Museum (see Donica below) and took lots of pictures (that would be me), as represented by this window. It's always a challenge to pick a sneak preview but the album will speak for itself.

We got up to the castle via the funicular at 4p and left just after 10p, giving us plenty of time to see everything during the daylight hours before the city became enchanted at night. My favorite photo of the the entire weekend, I think, is this shot (below left) of the castle from our hotel room the previous day. As with the photos at the top of this post, here's the "To and From" looks, this time at night.

In leaving the castle Sunday night, before our departure back to Hannover the next day, we had the perfect song to sing from The Sound of Music:

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night,
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight...

The sun has gone to bed and so must I...
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.
