Our 2013 American Trip: Tybee Island, Georgia

After our all-day tour of Savannah, Georgia, the day before (last post), we woke up to a gloriously sunny Wednesday for our half-day trip to Tybee Island, before heading back to Bob and Peggy's, south of Atlanta.

Tybee Island is all of 2.7 sq. miles with a population of approximately 3K people just 18 miles east of downtown Savannah.  And because we visited during the off-season, in the middle of the week, we had it almost all to ourselves!

I just LOVE boardwalks down to the beach, don't you?!
And yes, that's the Atlantic Ocean.

What is it that calls us to the sea?

As long as I can remember, "big water" has beckoned me.
Was it living in Michigan near the Big Lakes?

It's partly the beachcombing, of course.
Treasures of the sea.

After filling up our lungs with salt air that first stop, we drove to the lighthouse, first built in 1736.
What is it about lighthouses??!!
See how it just gets better and better.

Across the parking lot from the lighthouse is the Tybee Museum from 1961.
Though we didn't pay to go in, I especially liked all the flags, going back to the Spanish Period, 1520-1605.
There's even a Pirates flag at this Battery Garland of Fort Screven!

Behind the museum we walked down to the beach on this part of the island.
A charm of a different color!
(that's Astrid's pelican weathervane, which I totally missed!)

I had the chance to try out the focal range on my new 24-1200mm PowerShot camera,
getting all these birds at close to the 1200mm maximun.  Pure craziness!
(Don't worry is that means nothing to you...they were very far away, that's all.)

I love that the beaches have these photogenic swings, don't you!

AND a gazebo, where Bob and Peggy relaxed while Astrid and I beachcombed.

Walking back to the car...what a view!

Our last order of business before heading back home was the Crab Shack.
Bob had done the research and knew it was THE place to eat for lunch, chosen GA's best.
"Where the elite eat in their bare feet."
He heard no complaints from the peanut gallery!
Astrid and I shared the Sampler for one person and had more than enough to eat.

Remember, this was 2 weeks before Halloween!
And they can seat over 600 people during peak season.

That was that...our 3-day, 2-night trip to Savannah and Tybee Island, thanks to Bob and Peggy.  Every time we spend time with them they have finished another part of the house they built from scratch.

The entire ground/walk-out basement floor is an apartment where we stay when we're there.
We could LIVE there, easily.  HA!
Even Roscoe, their adopted dog, feels at home there.
(all above images were taken by Astrid except the one of Roscoe, top-left, on the way to boarding)

Before signing off on this trip, here are some flowers from Savannah with the new camera.
I really am quite pleased with the results.

Even the macros have pleasantly surprised me...though I want to do a lot more tweaking.
Lots of stops and whistles to figure out!

Next up...New York City, where we spent our first 5 days with Robin!

  1. Sounds like a great visit. I saw the live baby oysters so it must be a good oyster area. There are mussels on the plate too. The flower shots are very nice. I'm so glad you like the camera.

    1. The mussels were all for Astrid, since she's the one who loves them, Mary. I think I got something in exchange for them. HA! It was a great plate. And, yes, I'm really happy with this little camera. Thanks.

  3. I love the sea and the beach. Tybee beach is wonderful and those boardwalks are new to me. Being at the sea is great for the mind and soul. I love looking for shells and other things that are on the beach.
Looking at these pictures, make me relive the vacation again. Great job on the macros of the flowers. I know you are thrilled to no end, with the endless functions of the new camera.
Bob and Peggy's place is always a treat, each year we can see it more finished, with the most details.
Sometimes I pinch myself, going on all these trips is a dream come true. IHVJ.

    1. We all so lucky, aren't we! One day I'd like to do the same thing with Charleston. So much is at our fingertips when we go back to Atlanta! And you're my Partner in Crime. :) Thank you.

  4. Really 1200mm???? I've never heard of such a zoom unless those are not DSLR numbers. Please explain. I'm very puzzled, and tell me about that new cam. If you weren't carrying such a lens, it looks like you had a wonderful relaxing time on the beach. I look forward to your visit to my town.

    1. It’s the Canon PowerShot “miracle” toy, Ted, which is NOT a DSLR, of course, but one of those things you can hardly believe until you use it (which I did again today). Did you see this bird I posted on Friday at Shutterchance? http://ginniehart.shutterchance.com/image/2013/11/08/hopalong-cassidy/ (at 1093.5mm). It’s pure craziness.

Here’s a review of the camera: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-powershot-sx50-hs . For me, it’s for traveling when I need something lighter. The 28-300 lens really aggravated my sciatic issues. I still have my big-girl camera…with the 24-105mm red-ring and the 100mm macro red-ring. For now, that’s enough for me!

    1. We don't even hear much about it either while in Georgia/Atlanta, Maria, so you're not alone. It would have been fun to explore it further, if we had had the time.

  6. I remember trips to Tybee when we were kids and it was just the water & beach ... but I also remember Stone Mountain when it was just a big old rock with a picnic table!
Love your pretty flower images and the swings, what a great idea!

    1. And to think Stone Mountain now has that huge carving and the laser shows!!! Nothing ever stays the same, Susan, does it. Thank you for stopping by and commenting!
