Something WICKED This Way Comes

Not the movie but the Broadway Musical (click on the image for the official website)! We first heard about it last fall when my niece Shari took her mom (my sister Susan) in Chicago just before Susan's wedding. Shari has worked with high school choirs for years and said this is the absolutely best musical ever! So we paid attention! It is now here in Atlanta and for Mother's Day, Donica got tickets for me, Amy, her mom and aunt for this afternoon's show (while she slaves away in Amsterdam!).

Atlanta's Fabulous Fox Theatre is in Midtown and is where we have seen so many plays and musicals. It really is fabulous. A place you grow to love more every time you're in it. It has an atmosphere that makes you feel you're "big time." Okay, Kim, so it's not exactly New York or Broadway. But I'm guessing it's a close second, and we love it.

This particular musical is "the untold story of the witches of Oz," specifically of Glinda, the Good Witch, and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West (WWW)...the prequel to The Wizard of Oz, as told by Gregory Maguire in his novel.

Oh my! I won't give any of it away but IT'S WONDERFUL! Wickedly delicious. Wickedly delightful. Based on the musical alone (I haven't read the book), I'd pick the WWW to be my friend first before the "Good Witch." And I'd wear any of her paraphernalia with pride! Sometimes Wicked is Good; sometimes Good is Wicked. And that's all I'll say about that :)

Thank you, Donica! Wish you could have seen it with us!

  1. Glad you enjoyed it and I wish I could have been there too? Maybe it will return next year and I will have another chance.

  2. Wickedly wonderful! I saw it last year, one of my all time favorite productions. I haven't read the book either, I'm an extremely slow reader that the size of it scares me.

  3. Donica: I'd like that!

Mad: So glad you saw it. How fun.

Mr. Fab: Amy says the book is VERY different from the musical and almost was a distraction for her. But there IS a lot of detail that the musical couldn't get into, of course. I'll probably read Amy's copy eventually.

  4. The book is actually quite different from the musical. I'm almost done reading it and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. So fascinating! Mom, I'll be passing it along to you soon!

  6. Well, what can I say except that I'm thrilled you enjoyed it! I love so many things about this show, but most of all the way it portrays friendship, grace, forgiveness, acceptance, redemption...

Do you have the soundtrack? Schwartz really outdid himself with this one! In one show you are surprised while you laugh, cry, and enter into the Land of Oz! Who played the major roles in Atlanta?

  7. Amy: Can hardly wait to read it...and I also want to see The Wizard of Oz again, soon.

    Jozee: I hope so too.

Mrs. M/Shari: I totally agree about those portrayals. There were a couple times I actually had tears in my eyes over how Elphaba (the green WWW) was treated.

Glinda was played by Annaleigh Ashford; Elphaba was played by Victoria Matlock. Not that it mattered since we were in the last row of the peanut gallery and totally forgot our binoculars! But both did an excellent job!

  9. HA, ET. I'm gonna keep you confused, I can see :) These pics were taken with my old camera which I will always carry with me in my purse because it's so small. I didn't even take my new camera with me (doesn't fit in my purse) because I knew I wouldn't be able to take pictures inside once the show started. But you can safely assume that any macro pics or far-away zoom pics will be with my new camera :)

  12. It sounds like you had a neat time! Seeing professional performances such as these are few and rare for me though every now and then I am blessed with a highschool performance that is extra special.

  13. ET: Maybe just for you I'll give you hints/clues :)

Tim: Believe it or not, some of the most memorable performances I have seen have been done by "non-professional" groups!

  14. I've seen many musicals in London (my Ex had a lot of business there) and I'll have to take Orange to Wested!! So fabulous!

"Sometimes Wicked is Good; sometimes Good is Wicked". Haha. I loved that and you're so right! ;-)

  15. What's "Wested," CS? That's a new one for me. Hmm. Anyway, how fun to see musicals in LONDON! Very cool.

  16. Sorry, I meant the "London's West End"! I sometimes hit the mousepad on my laptop without noticing and it messes up my writing :-)
